Finish with a swish.

Mouthwash reaches everywhere at once — but only if you use it right. The dose, the clock, and the one timing mistake almost everyone makes.

The routine

Six steps, start to finish

1

Pick a different time

Don't rinse right after brushing — it washes off the concentrated fluoride you just applied. After lunch is perfect.

2

Measure the dose

One capful — about 20 ml, but trust your label. Full strength; don't water it down.

3

Swish for 30 seconds

Really work it — cheek to cheek, through the teeth, front and back. Thirty seconds is longer than you think.

4

Gargle the back

Tip your head back for the last few seconds — the back of the tongue and throat hold a lot of the bacteria behind bad breath.

5

Spit it out

All of it — mouthwash is a rinse, not a drink. Never swallow, and keep it away from kids under six.

Then — nothing for 30 minutes

No food, no drinks, and no water rinse. That half hour is when the active ingredients actually do their job.

Swish with a plan

Most people quit at ten seconds. Follow the highlight around your mouth — and when you're done, start the 30-minute wait so the fluoride can finish the job.

Do this, skip that

Do

  • Use it at a separate time from brushing — midday rinse, morning and night brush.
  • Pick a fluoride rinse if you're cavity-prone, and follow your label's dose and timing.
  • Go alcohol-free if rinsing burns or your mouth feels dry — it works just as well.
  • Supervise kids 6–12; children under 6 shouldn't use mouthwash at all.
